Students of the Ural Federal University organized a number of underground illegal mining farms on the territory of the campus, states the official website of UFU.
The violators were tracked down due to the increased electricity consumption, explained the vice-principal for economics and strategic development of the university Daniel Sandler.
The topic of virtual currencies was raised during the lecture of the First Deputy of the Central Bank of Russia Dmitry Tulin. Vice-principal mentioned, that the university tries to keep up with a fashionable trend and after the discovery of the mining farm, first, they planned to take benefit from the situation, but after all, decided to ban the initiative.
“We noticed an increased electricity consumption in some faculties. No joking: we found out that people are mining cryptocurrencies here. First, we thought that we could draw our interest from the initiative, but after all, decided to close them,”— Sandler said.
