The Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation has started experimenting with blockchain technology, as stated this month by the Director of the Ministry’s Administrative Department Vasily Pushkin at TAdviser “EDE/ECM Day” conference.
In particular, the Ministry has been trying to adopt blockchain to public procurement process multi-stage automation. The innovative approach is based on Corda blockchain platform.
“At first, we started adopting blockchain because it was trendy, but after realizing how it all works in practice, we understood that this is a great must have for us. We have a lot of internal registers, interdependent local databases, and all these need to be interlinked somehow. We could see that blockchain technology offers a comparatively handy solution to this problem,” – the representative of the Ministry noted.
The Ministry operates 75 different information systems and databases, all those needing to be interlinked. It aims at creating separate information blocks each of them linked to a unified information system and thus making intra-departmental data processing more comprehensive and efficient.
According to Pushkin, the Ministry embarks in reconsidering the very essence of document as a concept, whereas the experiments with blockchain technology go in line with this general goal. The state agency wants a document to evolve into a set of information blocks stored at different registers that would allow for its automated assembly on demand, the official explained.
