A hacker from Kurgan attempted to use government computers for mining bitcoins

The 21-year-old resident of Kurgan was caught trying to get control over the computer facilities of Yaroslavl Region government in order to use their computational power for mining bitcoins.

Governmental cybersecurity officers were alarmed by discovering over 114 000 attempts of picking the related entrance password. They called for Federal Security Service (FSB).

«The resident of Kurgan decided to select a password for hacking the official governmental website by a virus program because bitcoins mining requires a powerful equipment that consumes a large amount of electricity», − the press service of the FSB Regional Office in Kurgan reported.

The intruder was quickly detected and busted. He is now being prosecuted under article 273 of the Criminal Code of Russian Federation «Creation, use and distribution of malicious software». If the court finds the young man guilty, he will face up to four years in prison.

As reported earlier, the scale of Android-based cryptolacking has increased by 4000 percent since last year.
