Iran: Promotion of Gram cryptocurency poses a threat to national security

Iranian authorities are trying to counteract the development of Gram cryptocurrency launched by Telegram messenger. Involvement with the token development and operation is now regarded as an action against national security and will be dealt with as disruption to Iranian economy.

As reported by Tehran Times on December 31, 2018, the country’s Criminal Content Definition Task Force (CCDTF) decided that any cooperation with Telegram to launch Gram constitutes an action against national security.

“One of the most important factors in banning Telegram was a sense of serious economic threat from its activities, which was unfortunately marginalized and neglected due to the fuss in the political atmosphere of the country,” – Javad Javidnia, Chairman of the CCDTF commented on the matter.

In April 2018, Iranian judiciary banned Telegram messaging app in the country. Back then, local telephone and internet providers were obliged to block the access to Telegram, making all those disobeying the ruling subject to prosecution.
